Oh no! That painful bump, right under the skin, close to the mouth… A cold sore is coming.
Cold sores, or fever blisters, are very common. They can be painful but mostly, the pain to our ego is much greater. No one wants a cold sore close to their lip, with everyone staring at it like a train wreck.
Caused by the herpes simplex virus HSV-1, don’t confuse cold sores with the HSV-2 virus which causes genital herpes. Many of us have the HSV-1 virus inside, ready to come out and ruin the coming week. But there are a few steps easily taken to prevent colds sores, or diminish their impact.
If a cold sore is springing to the surface, take a look at your stress levels and your nutrition. Stressed out? Eating too much sugar? Those two will lower your immune system, and leave you vulnerable to cold sores.
Take plenty of vitamin C and relax a bit. Get a good night sleep. If you work outside, protect your lips from the sun. And add my go-to supplement, L-Lysine.
Though there is some contradictory research, most studies claim good success for cold sores when taking 1 to 2 grams of L-Lysine at the onset of symptoms.
L-Lysine is an essential Amino Acid, which means we need to get it from our diet. (An amino acid is a fraction of a protein.) L-Lycine can be found in fish, meat and dairy products. But if you feel a cold sore coming, I suggest getting a high quality L-Lycine supplement, 1 to 2 grams per day, for at least 5 days.
It may not stop the cold sore completely, but in my experience, the symptoms were way less painful – and obvious.
